If your business is in rural areas or close to grassy fields or crops, you can be sure to experience a mass influx of rodents during harvest season. Waterfront properties are also very common with mice and rat invasions.

Without a pest management program in place, this mass invasion of rodents can overtake your facility in a very short time. There are several reasons for this sudden increase in rodent populations within commercial properties. A hard frost or freeze will certainly move mice and rats indoors. The harvesting of crops, mowing fields, plowing, burning fields and flooding will also contribute to rodent invasion. Of course, this sudden presence of a heavy rodent population brings several risks to the business owner. The feces scattered throughout the building spreads bacteria and will contaminate countertops, storage rooms, food preparation stations as well as the products being prepared for customers. There are also multiple diseases in which rodents are known to be carriers. This creates serious risks to your employees and customers.

Protect Your Facility From Being Invaded By Rodents

There are a few things you can do to immediately protect your facility from being invaded. Begin with a thorough inspection of your property, both inside and out. Keep in mind that mice and rats can run along electrical wires and climb cables, vines and shrubs. They can chew through a number of materials including wood, rubber, window screens, aluminum sheeting, vinyl, fiberglass and even old deteriorating concrete.

When inspecting the outside area, look for any potential points of entry for mice and rats. This could be rub marks, tracks, gnawing or chewing and feces around any openings, holes or cracks. Inspect heating and air conditioning ducts, roof and wall vents, roof soffit overhangs, poorly hung entry doors and rubber weather stripping under garage doors and repair where needed as these are all common entry points for rodents.

Rodents are very dependent on food and water sources and will only inhabit facilities where these sources are readily available. All consumable products must be kept in sealed, pest proof containers when possible. Rodents will consume everything from paper goods to pet food, produce, cereals, baking goods and grains. Products like these and others should be stored in easily inspected areas at all times.

Finally, cleanliness is paramount in the management of rodents in commercial facilities. Keeping floors swept and mopped and counters cleaned will greatly reduce the availability of food and water.
